mountain bliss This was a trip of many firsts for me. The first time I hadn’t showered for 11 days (thank God for wet wipes); the first time I was a vegetarian for 11 days (yes, I had dreams of bacon) and the first time I slept at over 5000 m (Gorak Shep). The trek was incredibly beautiful, yet challenging and the mighty mountains humbled us all. With weather changing from blue, sunny skies to cloud, mist and even hail in seconds, it was clear who was in control. Trekking through the Himalayas is like nothing I have experienced before. You don’t go up, simply to come down, but rather pass through various terrains ranging from cloud forests to desert-like plains; high suspension bridges over torrent waters to jagged rock moraines. Besides the stunning mountain views my favourite part was playing witness to daily life of the Sherpa people; travelling butchers carving and weighing meat for local households, monks spinning prayer wheels and porters carrying everything from carpets to steel poles on their backs. The Dalai Lama once called this trek the ‘stairway to heaven’ and now I truly understand why.
