Peddlers-Chembur It’s been 7 years since I’ve been back to the fatherland. I call it that as only my father was born here – Dhaka actually, which was then East Bengal and today is Bangladesh. Despite being born and raised in Canada there is a strange feeling of ‘coming home’. I am very Canadian in many ways and this is apparent by the constant stares and curious looks I encounter on every corner of this place. It must be my mannerisms or my ‘way’ as I have been told that gives me away (that and the white guy I’m hanging out with I suppose). Indians are quite stoic people, at least until you get to know them. I, on the other hand smile warmly, show my appreciation when someone helps me and maybe laugh a little too loudly and often. However, there are many things that remind me that this where my blood comes from; children running barefoot through the streets, women sitting cross-legged on chairs and seeing myself in the many big, dark eyes that stare back at me. Amongst the pure chaos, stench and insanity there is something strangely comforting and familiar here to me. It’s good to be back.
