mountain bliss There are few things in life that I won’t try once. So when the idea of renting a motorbike in Kathmandu to ride out to a surrounding village came up, I agreed whole heartedly. My mind raced with blissful thoughts of riding carefree through the pristine Nepalese countryside. The sun shining and the wind blowing fresh from the surrounding mountains…then reality set in: the chaos and congestion of Kathmandu, cars careening past at break-neck speeds down narrow alley ways; motorbikes and rickshaws narrowly missing wide-eyed and jittery tourists hoping to get through the streets unscathed. We would have to escape the battle of the capital’s traffic before being rewarded with Nepalese nature. With Aparna on the back and Ron (one of the MS climbers) in tow, we set out amidst the exhaust and, it seemed like the entire population of Kathmandu on bikes to find our way out of the city. It seemed I had just entered a real life video game, but without any extra ‘lives’ to spare. After an hour of dust, horns and pit stops for directions, Kathmandu finally released its tenuous grip on us and the highway opened up to the undulating hills and windy roads of the countryside. Another hour later we rolled into Panauti somewhat tired and dirty, but at the same time invigorated as we had survived our journey.
