MS climb team After a couple of false starts we finally made it to Lukla, the start point of the Everest Trek. Bad weather had grounded the small 16 seater plane from flying creating a back-log of eager climbers in the chaotic Kathmandu airport. After 2 days of waiting we were presented with the opportunity to charter an old Russian helicopter, so in a last ditch effort to get on the trail we divied up the cost. Early next morning we met our ride, an old hunk of junk; a cold-war helicopter that had definitely seen some airtime..and so had the Russian pilots that came with. As the motors whined and the heavy blades started churning through the Kathmandu smog we were soon high above the city heading eastwards towards our destination. The noise was deafening, but soon my attention was diverted to the stunning white peaks of the Himalayas in the distance. The pastured hills of the valley sprawled out below the base of the mountains where villages clung precariously to their sides and terraces flowed below. Half an hour later we arrived in Lukla and our trek finally began. Today I am writing from Namche Bazar, sitting at 3450 m. We are off tomorrow to Tengboche towards our goal of Kala Patar (5545 m). See you in a few days….
