mountain bliss Community based tourism (CBT) projects are what Original Trails loves to support. CBT projects involve finding ways to meet the needs of the local community, to empower and improve quality of life through tourism. Our Ethiopian trip supports TESFA, a CBT initiative that involves trekking through the beautiful Meket Highlands, while staying in traditional “tukul” huts and enjoying true Ethiopian hospitality. In the latest newsletter, TESFA states: “Community based tourism is working for the people of Mequat Mariam”. The community uses the money gained through the tourist treks to pay for the their land taxes and to buy additional grain to support the community. In addition, they buy cash crops such as soya beans which are then planted and sold at a later date for a profit. “The concept that a whole community is empowered to act as a grain merchant for their communal benefit is very exciting”. It’s clear that tourism is playing a pivotal and positive role in empowerment of Mequat Mariam people. TESFA is proving that done in the right way, community based tourism works. The model is being replicated to provide opportunities for other communities in the region. Check out our Ethiopian Exposure tour to experience the TESFA trek and the beauty of Ethiopia.
